COSHH Assessment Management System

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 require employers to assess the risks to the health of their employees arising from exposure to hazardous substances. To comply with the COSHH regulations an employer must:

  • Assess risks to health
  • Decide on precautions
  • Prevent or control exposure
  • Ensure that control measures are in place and used
  • Where necessary monitor exposure and carry out health surveillance
  • Where necessary prepare emergency plans
  • Attend to employee training and supervision

The new COSHH Assessment Management System is designed to help your business comply with the regulations.

Main Features

Template based input

A COSHH assessment is created by selecting a template and completing it like a questionnaire. Templates are defined according to your business requirements and can be as simple or complex as required. Partially completed assessments can be saved and completed later. The questions are presented to the user in a variety of formats depending on the sort of information expected.

Assessment in Edit format

Note that the section Material or Process can be repeated to allow an assessment to cover many materials. This feature is defined in the template and can be applied to any section. Items flagged with ** are required to be completed, and the system will prevent an assessment from being finalised until they are filled in. This rule can be applied to any Item and is defined in the template.

Completed assessments are presented in a view only format and can be printed if necessary.

Assessment in browse format

Database storage and retrieval

Assessments are stored in a COSHH database, there is no realistic limit on the number of assessments that the system can handle. A text indexing system is used to allow fast retrieval of assessments

List of Assessments

This is the initial screen that is presented to the user. The text searching facility allows fast retrieval of the assessments based on word or phrase searching results can be viewed in Title or ID (Reference) order.

Customisable to suit corporate standards

The sample screen shots above show the standard style of the pages in the COSHH Assessment Management System. This can be customised to suit corporate requirements.

Implement defined business processes

The core system has a basic set of business rules covering such things as who can edit and authorise a assessments, who can maintain user accounts etc. However one of the main strengths of the COSHH Assessment Management System is in its modular design. In addition to allowing easy customisation of the pages presented to users, also allows the core system to be expanded and customised to implement your own business rules and processes. It interfaces to SMTP based email systems to provide email notification in support of business processes.

The system is designed to allow further expansion such as incident and accident reporting etc.

Scalable web based system

Designed as an Enterprise application and running on a corporate intranet, it is the ideal solution for multi-site organisations that need to have up to date COSHH assessments available to their employees anywhere in the world. It is Internationalised and can present the interface in any language.

Implement on a choice of platforms

For the technically minded, this is a multi tier application, developed using Open Industry Standards and will run on any Java platform including Microsoft Windows (2000, NT4 and XP), Unix and Linux. It will support any relational database with a suitable Java JDBC driver (eg Oracle, SQL server, MySQL). Originally designed to work with Microsoft Explorer, no problems have been found with other modern browsers.
